HIGHLIGHTS OF WEEK 1 OF SIWW2021 ONLINE

SIWW2021 SPOTLIGHT (21 JUNE 2021)

Min Grace Fu SIWW2021 Spotlight_Session 1
SIWW2021 Spotlight_Session 2 DPM

Here are some memorable quotes from our speakers who spoke at SIWW2021 Spotlight:

“Singapore is playing our part to advance the sustainability agenda ... the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a roadmap to guide Singapore’s sustainable future … comprises plans and concrete targets for many sectors. For water, we aim to enhance our water security while reducing our energy intake and carbon footprint."

“We have to shape the city in a way that we gradually use technology, but also the will of the citizens to participate … we have to move gradually towards this new world, and I give my city Rotterdam, from now, 25 years, to get to net zero.”

“In a Water Optimised World, water will be abundant not scarce, water will be accessible not elusive, water will be affordable but not undervalued, and water will be adaptable.”

“Being resilient means being hard to knock down and being able to recover quickly… Step 1 (is to) know what will kill you and then prepare as best as you can to avoid premature death. Step 2 is to always know what will keep you alive... what are the essentials that you will need to keep operations going, and then make sure you never run out.”

“While focused on the pandemic, utilities have managed to continue to innovate and deliver against global climate goals. By maintaining our focus on reuse and the circular economy, the water sector has an opportunity to be the global example for truly sustainable development.”

“Water is not somebody else’s issue. It is my issue, your issue, our issue altogether. At the end of the day, we have an extraordinary opportunity in front of us to solve the challenges.”

“What we don’t want are well-intended projects that are creating solutions where there are no problems. What we need is a granular understanding of problems and then cooperation and innovation, adaptation of technology to solve those problems.”

“My vision … would be to see resilient cities … led by governments and utilities, in partnerships with business (to) … ensure access to good quality and quantity of water on a sustainable basis, overcoming challenges of climate and other uncertainties, a waterwise world in which water is fully appreciated and respected.”

“Yes, we can achieve net zero if there is sufficient government and population support … By having a mindset that everything is a resource, you can introduce carbon neutrality … the technology exists, without any doubt whatsoever.”

“Financial incentives are often running the wrong way, and we have institutionalised systems which are continuing to encourage businesses and consumers to use carbon emissions solutions rather than carbon reducing solutions.”

“Climate change is already here … the hard part now, is how cities are going to up their game, working with industry to tackle climate change impact on water. Likewise, the industry also needs to step forward and help cities to enhance resilience.”

TW.2 Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Laureates Roundtable: "Game-changing Technologies for a Sustainable Water Future"

LKYWP Roundtable

Established in 2008, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize honours the best minds in water solutions. In this roundtable, six Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Laureates spoke openly on current initiatives that they are working on, and the latest developments in science and innovation. Addressing the challenges posed by climate change and the pandemic, Laureates exchanged views on future research efforts required in resource recovery, wastewater treatment, groundwater recharge, and virus detection in wastewater.

TW.4 Celebrating Women in Engineering

TW4

Co-organised with Jacobs to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, four outstanding female leaders discussed the influences that shaped their early interest in engineering, highlights of their career, the importance of diversity in the engineering profession, and how they are contributing towards a sustainable water world today.

TW.6 & TW.8 Utilities of the Future – Is Smarter Water Better Water? (Sessions 1 and 2)

TW6

TW8

Leading global water utilities, digital and cybersecurity experts shared how digitalisation redefined business processes, improved customer service levels, supported better decision making, and enhanced system-level efficiencies. Specific case studies on ongoing digital innovation were introduced and discussed. Speakers also spoke about challenges with digital adoption, including cybersecurity risks, system-wide optimisation hurdles, and change management.

TW.7 A Career in the Water Profession

TW7

Co-organised with the Environmental Engineering Society of Singapore, this session was targeted at youths and students to excite them about taking up a career in the water profession. Speakers including Dave Flinton (SVP & Chief Innovation, Technology and Products Officer of Xylem) and six young water professionals spoke passionately about the diverse opportunities that exist in the water sector, the myriad of different career options, and the satisfaction of “doing good” in providing safe drinking water and sanitation to the world.

TW.5 Sustainability Leadership in Water: Experiences from Industry and Utility

TW5

In this session, industry and utility leaders discussed the risks that climate change brings to the water sector, and agreed that “business as usual” is no longer viable. Speakers shared perspectives and examples on sustainable practices to build a more climate-resilient water sector, and the collaborative roles that different stakeholders, including utilities, industries and professional associations, play in an integrated ecosystem.

TW.1 Water Resilient Cities: Lessons from Recent Extreme Events

TW1

Addressing the threat of climate impacts, speakers presented case studies on responses to Day Zero in South Africa and the massive flooding from super Typhoon Mangkhut in Hong Kong in 2018. On COVID-19, plans by the Asian Development Bank to build a more resilient water sector post- COVID-19 was presented. Recognising that legacy issues in urban planning pose an obstacle to these threats, speakers agreed that there is a need for stronger partnerships and a more inclusive consultative approach across stakeholders to build water resilient cities.
